Laundry is a cycle we go through, not a to-do list item to be checked off.

“Once you embrace the idea that laundry isn’t a box to tick but a cycle to manage, the pressure lifts - and you can focus on keeping it flowing rather than fighting to get it ‘done.’” writes Sue Spencer. There are many tasks we can put on a list to have that satisfying check off at the end of the day such as clearing the counters or tidying a room, however laundry just isn’t one of those. Once we accept that laundry is a part of our daily rituals, we can begin to reframe what that ritual looks like for us. And this is where the whimsy comes in!

Embrace the Everyday Ritual

What if laundry was a ritual that you practiced every day with intention? What would that look like for you? Instead of rushing through the task, try leaning into it as a mindful moment of your day. Here are some tips to start:

• Set an intention: Think of each load as a small act of care for your family. This can be a time you pray over each one of your family members as you fold their laundry, or you can find a poem or song to memorize as you load the clothing. The intention can be a way to stack a meaningful habit on top of the mundane one.

• Create a rhythm: Folding can become a soothing, almost meditative practice. Match each step with a small joy like a few deep breaths or a favorite song. I often joke how I wish to be a Disney princess who has the help of the birds and the fawns to do her chores. While that may not be realistic, I think Disney is on to something with the melodic ways these hidden forest princesses go about their days.

• Celebrate the little wins: Finished a load? Take a moment to admire your neatly folded clothes. Take a picture of it. Notice the tiny socks laid next to yours. Say a thought of gratitude, “I’m grateful for these clothes that keep my family warm.”

Create Whimsical Laundry Scents

Smell has profound power due to its direct connection to the brain's emotional and memory centers. It acts as a powerful subconscious tool for behavior, leading to reduce stress and increase focus. For children especially, these subtle sensory cues build feelings of safety and belonging. For parents, they can make a repetitive task feel nurturing instead of draining. The laundry room can become a haven for your own signature home scent. So let’s create one!

• Start with a clean foundation use unscented or fragrance-free detergent

• Add 1-2 drops of essential oils to wool dryer balls

• Make your own linen spray

  • Fill a spray bottle with 1 cup water + 1tbsp witch hazel or vodka + 10 drops essential oils

  • Refresh blankets and throws

  • Lightly mist sheets before bed or freshen guest bedding

• Make herbal sachets

  • Fill small cotton or muslin bags with dried herbs

  • Place in drawers, baskets, or linen closets (but not in the washer or dryer)

Gentle, Whimsical Scent Blends

There are so many options you can choose from to create your own signature scent. I like change mine with the season to reflect winter, spring, summer, and fall. Here are a few soft combinations to try:

Calm & Cozy

• Lavender + vanilla (5 + 3 drops)

Gentle & Cheerful

• Sweet orange + chamomile (4 + 4 drops)

Clean & Airy

• Lemon + cedarwood (4 + 3 drops)

Soft Floral

• Lavender + rose (4 + 2 drops)

Kid-friendly Herbs:

If you have kids at home, here are a few kid-friendly herbs to consider for your signature home scent:

• Lavender

• Chamomile

• Rose

• Lemon balm

Creating a Space You Find Joy In

When the same gentle fragrance lingers in blankets and in bath towels pulled warm from the dryer, it begins to say something without words. It becomes a memory maker for your family. Once we accept that laundry is a rhythm of our day, we can create deeper intention with it. While not every load of laundry may be done with great cheer, we can still find meaning in the ordinary moments that no longer pressure us.
